The fast answer on access: OpenAI listed it for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and as an API model named
gpt-6.1-sol
. It was not yet available in regular Chat, according to the launch announcement.

The release arrived at DevDay. Our OpenAI DevDay 2026 roundup covers the wider event; this page focuses on where to use Sol 6.1 and what its public specs change from GPT-6 Sol.

Where GPT-6.1 Sol was available on launch day

Launch-day access by surface, from OpenAI’s announcement and API model page.

Surface

September 29 status

What to know

ChatGPT Work

Listed for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu

OpenAI names these plans in its announcement.

Codex

Listed for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu

This is separate from the regular Chat surface.

Chat

Not yet available

OpenAI explicitly distinguishes Chat from ChatGPT Work.

API

Available as
gpt-6.1-sol

The API model page lists $2 per million input tokens, $0.10 per million cached input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. API token rates do not describe what is included in a ChatGPT or Codex subscription. The announcement gave no region-by-region rollout schedule, so verify current product availability before relying on this launch-day snapshot. The API model reference has the identifier, prices and limits.

For developers, the model reference says to use the Responses API for tool calling. Chat Completions supports this model without tool calling. The model page also lists the Free API tier as unsupported. Standard input and output prices did not change; cached input is half the previous listed price. The context and output figures are API specifications, not a promise that every ChatGPT Work or Codex surface exposes the same limits.

The standard per-token rates also have an important boundary: OpenAI says prompts with more than 272,000 input tokens are billed at twice the input and cache rates and 1.5 times the output rate for the full request. A long prompt is not priced entirely at the table’s standard rates. The current 6.1 model page has the processing-mode and regional price variations.

For the older model choice, see our GPT-6 Sol vs Luna comparison. OpenAI describes Sol 6.1 as approaching GPT-6 Astra on selected tasks; our GPT-6 Astra guide explains that model, and our Astra API pricing guide covers its published rates.

How strong is the performance claim?

OpenAI reports improvements over GPT-6 Sol on selected coding, professional-work and computer-use evaluations, and says Sol 6.1 approaches Astra on some of them. These are OpenAI-reported results, not an independent comparison of your workload. OpenAI notes that its evaluations run in a research environment or through its API and may differ from production ChatGPT because prompts, tools and reasoning effort can differ. DMT has not run a separate hands-on test.

If you are deciding whether to switch, compare both versions on a few repeatable tasks you actually do. Keep the prompt, input files, tools and reasoning setting the same where possible, then record which result you accept, the corrections needed, and time or API cost. For subscriptions, compare your actual usage experience instead of translating API token prices into a plan allowance.

What is not public yet?

OpenAI calls GPT-6.1 Sol an upgrade, but its public release and model pages do not explain underlying architecture or training changes. The announcement also said Sol Ultrafast would arrive in the coming days, with up to eight-times-faster token generation in Codex. That was a future availability statement on launch day, so check OpenAI’s current page before treating it as live.

Disclosure: This overview was prepared with AI assistance and checked against OpenAI’s linked release and API documentation.
