AI Max for Search is now generally available; the Advertising MCP server is available in read-only open flight; Ad Preview Hub is generally available globally for Performance Max; new account-linking requests need two identifiers; and Max CPC will disappear from new non-portfolio campaigns using selected maximize strategies on 1 October. The safe response is to inventory access, linking, previews, targets and measurement—not to assume every account has every feature or that Microsoft’s product claims are independent performance evidence.

These updates belong together as a monthly operational roundup, but they are not one switch. AI Max changes Search controls, MCP changes how authorised users can inspect live account data through an AI client, Ad Preview Hub changes pre-launch review, and Max CPC changes the controls available when a new campaign is created. Keep separate owners and receipts for each.

Definition of the key controls

Open flight

Microsoft’s stated rollout label for the read-only MCP server; it does not remove OAuth or account-scope requirements.

Dual-ID

The two identifiers required on new account-linking requests or API calls in the specified paths.

View-only preview

A shareable Ad Preview Hub review link that does not grant campaign editing access.

The August 2026 changes at a glance

Update

Microsoft’s current statement

What an operator should verify

AI Max for Search

Optional Search feature suite is generally available.

Campaign eligibility, matching/text/URL controls, brand and term exclusions, and the account’s reporting state.

Advertising MCP server

Read-only access is available through open flight for AI assistants including Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude.

OAuth, customer/account identifiers, permissions, client configuration and human review before any change outside the read-only tools.

Dual-ID account linking

New linking requests require two identifiers; API enforcement rolls from 26 August through 22 September.

Manager/account number plus the required ID in new API calls, with a request receipt.

Ad Preview Hub

Generally available globally for Performance Max, with view-only links for review.

Representative placements, formats, devices, assets, policy state and stakeholder approval.

Performance Max reporting and controls

Uplift experiments, easier search-term reporting, age/gender exclusions and average target metrics are rolling out; age/gender is expected generally available by 8 September.

Account-level availability and the exact campaign type before relying on a control.

Max CPC

Unavailable from 1 October for new non-portfolio campaigns using Maximize Conversions with Target CPA, Maximize Conversion Value with Target ROAS, or Maximize Clicks. Search-term matching can use keywords, ads, landing pages and contextual signals to find queries beyond the existing list. Text customization can generate and test additional messaging from existing assets and website content. Final URL expansion can select a relevant landing page. The three features change different parts of a Search campaign, so record them separately in an experiment or change log.

Start with a campaign inventory. For each candidate campaign, capture its current keywords, match types, negatives, brand controls, ad assets, final URLs, tracking templates, location settings, bid strategy, budget and conversion actions. Then write one hypothesis: for example, whether broader intent coverage can increase qualified query discovery while preserving the existing brand and landing-page boundaries. A new query or AI-generated asset is not automatically a better business outcome.

Microsoft’s 27 August AI Max announcement reports internal tests and an early conversion increase. Those are Microsoft’s claims, not an independent benchmark and not a forecast for a particular account. Use the controls and a predeclared measurement plan first. DMT’s Microsoft AI Max Search campaign guide covers the feature-level test and rollback boundary.

The Advertising MCP server: useful because it is read-only

The roundup says the Microsoft Advertising Model Context Protocol server can connect live Microsoft Advertising data to Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude and other AI assistants. Microsoft describes reports, campaign audits, keyword research and AI-driven insights as use cases. The public entity-tools documentation describes read-only retrieval for accounts, campaigns, ad groups, ads, keywords, asset groups and audience associations, with filters, sorting, pagination and optional performance reporting.

Read-only is the important boundary. A conversational answer can help an analyst find campaigns, compare query themes or identify missing UET goals, but it is still an interpretation of retrieved account data. It is not an authorisation to edit bids, budgets, ads or targets. Keep a human approval step before any action in the Microsoft Advertising UI or API.

Confirm the Microsoft Advertising customer and account identifiers.

Complete the documented OAuth and client setup for the selected assistant.

Request the smallest read-only entity set needed for the question.

Save the request, filters, date range, page tokens and returned counts.

Reconcile a sample against the platform before making a recommendation.

Route any proposed mutation through the normal account owner and change receipt.

Microsoft’s public tools page states that most entity calls require both CustomerId and AccountId and that the tools never modify account data. Setup still requires authorisation, and the page displayed an authorization notice when accessed. Do not turn a public setup page into a claim that a DMT or client account has been connected.

Dual-ID account linking is a September API check

For new manager links, Microsoft says the request must include a Manager Account Number and Manager Account ID. For account links, the request must include a Manager Account Number and Account Number. The platform change applies to new linking requests and is planned to be generally available by the end of August. For Microsoft Advertising API users, calls must include both identifiers by 26 August, with enforcement rolling out from 26 August through 22 September.

This is an access-integrity change, not a campaign-performance feature. Before the next link request, locate every integration, script or client library that creates ClientLink requests. Add a validation that both identifiers are present, preserve the response and record whether the link was a manager (CID) or account (XID) request. A failed link can look like a reporting or campaign-sync problem downstream, so surface it separately.

Use Ad Preview Hub before a Performance Max launch

Microsoft says Ad Preview Hub is now generally available globally for Performance Max, extending an earlier Audience Ads experience. It is intended to show how ads may appear across placements, formats and devices, and it can bring headlines, descriptions, images, logos and videos together for review. View-only links let a stakeholder review the preview without being given account editing access.

Treat the preview as a rendering and approval check, not proof of delivery. A preview cannot establish final impression volume, auction eligibility, conversion quality or policy approval in every context. Capture the campaign, asset group, preview date, device/placement choices, visible gaps and the approver. If an image, video, logo or text asset is missing, resolve that before launch rather than interpreting the omission as a performance signal.

Performance Max reporting and targeting additions

The roundup lists three Performance Max updates: uplift experiments for measuring a campaign alongside comparable non-Performance Max activity, search-term reporting surfaced in both Search Term Insights and Search Term, and age/gender targeting exclusions. Microsoft says age/gender exclusions are rolling out and expected to be generally available by 8 September. Availability can vary by account, so check the actual campaign UI or API before writing a procedure as universal.

Average target metrics are also being added to Campaign Overview, the Campaign grid and portfolio bid strategies. These are useful for reading target history over time, but a displayed average target is not a qualified revenue measure. Keep conversion definitions, attribution windows, CRM outcomes and seasonality notes alongside the platform view. DMT’s target bidding changes guide provides a comparable discipline for interpreting automated targets.

Max CPC changes on 1 October

From 1 October 2026, Microsoft says Max CPC will no longer be available when creating new non-portfolio campaigns that use Maximize Conversions with Target CPA, Maximize Conversion Value with Target ROAS, or Maximize Clicks. Existing campaigns created before 1 October that already use Max CPC keep it. Max CPC also remains available for new and existing campaigns using portfolio bid strategies.

The practical implication is not “remove every CPC cap now.” First segment the account by campaign creation date, bid strategy and portfolio status. For in-scope new campaigns, plan how budget, target CPA, target ROAS, conversion-value rules and seasonality adjustments will carry the steering role Microsoft recommends. If a cap currently protects a low-volume campaign, document the business reason and the alternative guardrail before creating a replacement.

Microsoft encourages experiments to evaluate the effect of removing Max CPC. That is a recommendation, not a result. Do not promise that removing the cap will improve CPA, ROAS or volume. Preserve the campaign baseline and compare qualified outcomes over a declared window.

A safe order for the September account review

Inventory. Export campaign, account-link, bid-strategy, asset, URL, UET and conversion-action state with timestamps.

Repair access. Update new ClientLink calls for the Dual-ID requirement and confirm the right CustomerId/AccountId pairing.

Read, do not mutate. If MCP is approved, retrieve a narrow read-only sample and reconcile it to the platform.

Preview. Use Ad Preview Hub for representative Performance Max placements, formats and devices; record the view-only approval.

Test. If enabling AI Max or changing Max CPC strategy, define control, treatment, budget, targets, conversion quality and rollback before launch.

Reconcile. Separate platform metrics from site analytics and qualified CRM outcomes; note attribution lag and seasonality.

Publish the decision. Keep, pause, roll back or expand only after the named owner signs the receipt.

What this roundup does not prove

It does not prove that every AI Max feature is visible in every account, that MCP is enabled without authorization, that a preview will serve exactly as rendered, that age/gender controls are already generally available before 8 September, or that Max CPC removal will improve performance. It also does not turn Microsoft’s internal case studies or product-marketing statements into independent testing. Keep those limits visible when this article is used for planning or client advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Microsoft AI Max the same as Google AI Max?

No. The names describe separate products, controls and account surfaces. Use the Microsoft-specific setup and reporting rules here; use DMT’s Google AI Max testing guide for Google campaigns.

Can an AI assistant edit a Microsoft Advertising campaign through MCP?

The public entity-tools documentation describes read-only retrieval. Do not infer mutation permission from an AI assistant connection. Any edit still needs the account’s approved UI/API workflow and a human change receipt.

Should every advertiser remove Max CPC now?

No. The stated boundary concerns new non-portfolio campaigns using the named maximize strategies from 1 October. Existing pre-October campaigns and portfolio bid strategies retain Max CPC. Segment the account and test an alternative control deliberately.

What should I do first?

Export the account/linking and campaign baseline, then check the ClientLink identifiers and the actual feature state. The order matters because a missing access or linking receipt can invalidate later reporting.

Related DMT guides

Microsoft AI Max for Search campaigns

Google AI Max testing and planning tools

AI for Google Ads in 2026

Google Ads target bidding changes

ChatGPT Ads setup and measurement

Sources and visual credit

Microsoft Advertising: AI Max for Search and other product news for August 2026 — 31 August 2026 primary roundup.

Microsoft Advertising: Reimagining Search campaigns for the AI era with AI Max — 27 August 2026 feature announcement.

Microsoft Learn: MCP setup and MCP entity tools — setup and read-only boundaries.

Visuals: DMT-authored August change matrix, access flow and Max CPC date table; no account screenshot or invented performance chart.

Microsoft Advertising’s August 2026 roundup combines AI Max, read-only MCP, PMax previews, Dual-ID linking and a Max CPC change into one dated checklist.

[177
194,195,235
post-2873","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-digital-marketing","tag-ai-marketing","tag-marketing-automation","tag-ppc","no-featured-image
["GET
