Ubuntu and Debian use .deb packages; Fedora uses .rpm. OpenAI provides separate x64 and ARM64 builds and configures a signed package repository for updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linux users can work with projects, local files and Codex in the desktop app. Native Wayland support is experimental, with possible issues around floating windows, focus, positioning and keyboard shortcuts. OpenAI says it is available on macOS and Windows but not yet in the Linux preview. Use OpenAI&#8217;s documented repository rather than a repackaged community build, confirm the package architecture, and record the installed version. Test launch, authentication, file access, terminal hand-off, desktop notifications, keyboard shortcuts and the update path under the team&#8217;s actual Wayland or XWayland session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then test removal and recovery before a wider rollout. Confirm that uninstalling the app does not remove project files, that administrators can identify its local data directories, and that a failed update has a documented recovery path. A preview can be useful without being fleet-ready; the decision should depend on repeatable desktop behaviour and support boundaries, not merely a successful first launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the import flow can bring across<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ChatGPT desktop app can import supported instructions, settings, skills, plugins, projects and recent work from Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Cursor. It can also keep imported work in sync through automatic updates. Codex CLI supports Claude Code and Cursor through <code>\/import<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The import does not delete or change the original agent setup. That makes a staged migration possible: bring across selected items, test them, and keep the source environment intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to validate an imported project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose three representative tasks: one read-only analysis, one bounded code edit and one workflow that uses an external connector. Run each task in the source agent and the imported Codex setup with the same acceptance criteria. Compare which instructions were followed, which permissions were requested, which tools were available and whether the final diff stayed inside scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not enable automatic updates until the first import is understood. If the imported configuration contains duplicates or conflicting rules, resolve them at the source or keep a documented Codex-specific override. Mature Claude or Cursor setups can contain months of instructions, reusable skills, project context and recent conversations. Import reduces the rebuilding work and lets teams compare Codex using a closer version of their real environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not make two agents behaviourally identical. Prompt interpretation, tool policies, sandboxing and approval models still differ. Migration success should be judged on task outcomes and safety, not only whether files appeared in the new interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early Linux reaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Linux community reaction is mixed. Some users welcome a native package and update path; others point out that they already use the Codex CLI, web app or remote development from another desktop. Several comments focus on the absence of Computer Use and scepticism about an Electron-style desktop client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The import feature has less independent discussion so far. Early posts are mostly explanatory rather than hands-on migration reports.
